Upcoming event: ACCESS Hunger Walk

Every Spring, ACCESS of West Michigan sponsors the Hunger Walk - a collaborative event with many non-profits in the greater Grand Rapids region that raises money and awareness to address the growing problem of food insecurity. Senior Meals Program is delighted to once again participate in this worthy cause. Walkers raise funds through sponsors of their teams, and complete a 5K walk bright and early on Saturday, May 5, 2012. Senior Meals is currently looking for support in all areas (walkers, volunteers, and team sponsors). To donate directly to the Senior Meals team, please click here. For more information on how you can help, contact our Pantry Manager, Danielle Simmons at dsimmons@seniormealsonwheels.org or by phone at (616) 364-1104

Spreading some extra holiday cheer
This holiday season, Senior Meals Program, Inc. was contacted by local agency Home Instead Senior Care to participate in the “Santa for a Senior” program. The program, which is designed to reach out to older adults who do not have much social support, sets up Christmas trees in local businesses where individuals can pick ornaments with the name and gift ideas for a homebound senior. The gifts are then dropped off, and Home Instead makes sure they are delivered with an extra dose of holiday cheer. This wonderful program aims to not only fulfill Christmas wishes, but also to bring a little festive joy to those who may not have much of a holiday otherwise.

Senior Meals Program was able to deliver these gifts to 88 of our isolated, homebound seniors, who all loved the gifts and the joy they brought.
“This is the first present I got in 15 years.” – Kenneth, HDM client

'Tis the season!
DTE Energy played a HUGE role in our holiday preparation by volunteering at Senior Meals' central kitchen in northeast Grand Rapids, packaging meals for the next week of holidays, and going out to deliver them personally to our seniors. We can't express just how much all of us at Senior Meals Program appreciate members of the community giving back at a time like this. In addition, the energy company donated $100,000 split between multiple senior nutrition services including Senior Meals Program, AgeWell services out of Muskegon, and several agencies in the greater Detroit area.

ham and pinapple, au gratin potatoes, green beans, and fresh baked pie was the menu of the day
